Function of Transformer

Transformer works on the principle of Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction, and Faraday’s second law states that when a conductor is placed in a varying electric field, then an EMF will be induced. The main components of a transformer are primary winding, secondary winding, and transformer core. 

Electric flux is produced when current flows through the primary circuit, then it will move across the transformer core. Then, due to electromagnetic induction law, the flux will generate current in the secondary coils. In this process, there will be no change in the frequency.

  • To step up or step down the voltage by maintaining the frequency constant and also balancing the power in the same level. 
  • The number of turns of winding on the primary and secondary coils will decide the change in the voltage levels. 
  • The transformer which is used on the generating side will increase the voltage level and therefore it is called a step-up transformer. 
  • The transformer which is used on the load end will decrease the voltage level and therefore it is called a step-down transformer. 
  • Generally, the power generated will be of different voltages like, 3.3/6.6/11 kV. But while transmitting the power from one end, i.e. from the generating station to the end users. 
  • While transmission of power, in order to reduce transmission line losses, the voltage is stepped up at generating substation to high levels like 66/132/220/400 kV. The transformer used here is a step-up transformer. 
  • The high voltage power cannot be used, so the voltage should be decreased. Here, a step down transformer is used to reduce the voltage to 3.3/6.6/11 kV.
